Logan Director To Helm Boba Fett Movie For Lucasfilm

On top of Episode IX and Rian Johnson's planned fourth trilogy - not to mention whatever the Game of Thrones creators are working on - Disney and Lucasfilm are also planning a host of Star Wars spinoff movies under the Anthology banner. 2016 brought us Rogue One, this week will usher in Solo and sometime in the near future we'll get an Obi-Wan standalone, too. That's not all, though, as it appears now that an old project has been resurrected as well: the Boba Fett movie.

On top of Episode IX and Rian Johnson’s planned fourth trilogy – not to mention whatever the Game of Thrones creators are working on – Disney and Lucasfilm are also planning a host of Star Wars spinoff movies under the Anthology banner. 2016 brought us Rogue One, this week will usher in Solo and sometime in the near future we’ll get an Obi-Wan standalone, too. That’s not all, though, as it appears now that an old project has been resurrected as well: the Boba Fett movie.

Star Wars fans might recall that a vehicle for the beloved bounty hunter was announced a few years ago, with Chronicle‘s Josh Trank attached to direct. After his career crashed and burned following 2014’s Fantastic Four, however, it seemed to have been shelved indefinitely. Back in August, though, we learned that Lucasfilm was thinking of resurrecting the project and now, THR has confirmed it.

According to them, Logan director James Mangold has signed on to helm and write the pic, which is just one of many in development at the studio that’ll place the focus squarely on a single character. What the others may be, we don’t know – aside from the Obi-Wan movie – but this is certainly exciting news and comes at perhaps the perfect time, as Solo prepares to blast into theaters later tonight.

Of course, plot details are being kept tightly under wraps – and will be for quite some time – but fans will definitely be pleased to hear that Boba Fett is finally getting his own standalone outing. After all, the character has a huge amount of potential still to be mined. We don’t mean an origin story, either – the prequels attempted that and it was terrible – but rather, a solo movie that could redeem the Original Trilogy’s treatment of him.

There’s lots to explore here, too. Yes, we know how he dies in Return of the Jedi (he’s eaten by the big mouth in the desert), and we learn a little bit about his backstory in Attack of the Clones, but there’s a long hiatus between that film and his first appearance next to the Millennium Falcon in A New Hope. What happened during this time? He’s constantly revered as one of the best of the bounty hunters in the galaxy, but how did he earn that tile? Hopefully the Boba Fett movie will explain all that.

We’ll be sure to let you know once more emerges, but in the meantime, feel free to leave your initial thoughts on the project in the comments section down below.
