The Lonely Island’s feature film debut, which has been referred to as Conner4Real, will hit theaters on June 3, 2016, Universal announced today.
Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone make up the musical-comedy trio that has repeatedly taken Saturday Night Live by storm over the years with songs like “D— in a Box,” “I’m on a Boat” and “I Just Had Sex.” Producer Judd Apatow has wanted to make a movie with the group for years, and the stars finally aligned for this one, in which Samberg takes a starring role.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor will portray a rapper whose solo album bombs, leaving him embarrassed and with no hope of salvaging his fame other than reuniting the old boy band (including Schaffer and Taccone) he swore he’d leave behind forever. Tim Meadows has a supporting role as the rapper’s overworked but perpetually, inexplicably optimistic manager.
Schaffer and Taccone directed, as they did for the trio’s music videos, and all three members are producing.
Conner4Real (which may or may not still be the title, given that Universal referred to the film today as the Top Secret Untitled Lonely Island Movie) will open against stiff competition in the form of Paramount’s blockbuster sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 and Warner Bros.’ romantic drama Me Before You, but it should serve as a healthy piece of counter-programming.
