Lucasfilm Expresses Interest In A Solo: A Star Wars Story Sequel

There has been much talk of a potential sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story. Both leading man Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo) and director Ron Howard have commented on this. Now, it is Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy's turn.

One week remains until Solo: A Star Wars Story is released in theaters, and despite the wait, there’s already been much talk of a potential sequel to the film. Both leading man Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo) and director Ron Howard have commented on it and now, it’s Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy’s turn.

In a recent interview with Premiere Magazine in France, Kennedy seemed to say the next Star Wars standalone film would be about Lando Calrissian, who’s portrayed in Solo by Donald Glover. This news prompted much discussion online, but it was later revealed to be a mistranslation. In fact, the Lucasfilm president was actually expressing her interest in a Solo 2:

“We would love to tell a story about Lando Calrissian one day, but this is not news…There are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca.”

Those lucky enough to have already seen Solo claim it’s the perfect introduction to a new sub-franchise. It’s only logical, then, to think Kennedy would want to take advantage of this in the years ahead. Writer Lawrence Kasdan has commented on her apparent desire for a Solo 2 as well, so it seems the Star Wars boss has been involved with discussions about making an entire series of films about Han Solo since the days before George Lucas sold his beloved franchise to The Walt Disney Company.

Kasdan told ComicBook.com the following:

“[Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas] had decided that, as [Lucasfilm] went on…Kathy would run it [and] that part of what they were going to do was continue the Star Wars movies, and they had an idea for a bunch of ’em…When they called me up there, I said, ‘I don’t know if I’m up for a fourth Star Wars movie,’ and they said, ‘Well, what if it was Han?'”

Of course, only time will tell if Solo does well enough to merit sequels. After all, it’s very possible we’ve only just scratched the surface of what happens to Han before the start of the Original Trilogy, and one can only hope Lucasfilm gets the chance to tell all the stories about everyone’s favorite smuggler that it wants to.

Young Han’s journey begins when Solo: A Star Wars Story blasts into theaters on May 25th, 2018.
