Though the structure is mostly concealed, the red-and-white pattern certainly seems to indicate that this is a T-65 X-wing from the saga’s early years. Whether or not this is specifically Luke’s ship, however, is another matter entirely, and given the state of the starfighter in The Last Jedi, there’s reason to believe that this may be a different X-wing of the same model.

Some fans have even speculated that the ship will appear on Jakku as part of the debris from the old war, and sure enough, various set photos from the desert region of Wadi Rum, Jordan, have already made it a fairly popular prediction that a return to Rey’s home planet might be on the cards. Then again, it’s also been confirmed that Mark Hamill is returning for J.J. Abrams’ trilogy-closer, so surely a flashback scene of Luke in his old fighter isn’t out of the question.

Overall, there’s not a whole lot that this photo can definitively tell us about the upcoming film, but it’s still a welcome distraction until Abrams and Lucasfilm can reveal something bigger.

With principal photography wrapping earlier this month, the internet was momentarily hopeful that a teaser or a title reveal might be imminent. Alas, these last couple of weeks have proven pretty uneventful, but with Star Wars Celebration happening in April, it’s likely that the first trailer is no more than a couple of months away. In any case, there’ll be plenty of time for further details before Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
