Mad Max: Fury Road Director Says We’re Still Getting Two Sequels

The Mad Max franchise is one of those rare action film series that's gained critical as well as commercial acclaim. Director George Miller delivered the most recent installment, Mad Max: Fury Road back in 2015, and it's frequently counted amongst the greatest action flicks of the past few decades. Naturally, then, fans are curious to know when they'll get to see a sequel.

At the moment, Miller’s busy shooting Three Years of Longing, but he’s aware of the longing that fans all over the world have to see Max and his post-apocalyptic nightmare-fuelled world once again. And it seems we’ll get our wish someday soon. Talking to Indiewire, the director made the following comments about the next few Mad Max films:

There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story. We’re still solving, we’ve got to play out the Warners thing, it seems to be pretty clear that it’s going to happen.

So, the only thing standing in the way of the sequels is not just his commitments to his other projects, but also the heated dispute with Warner Bros. With the new AT&T merger, however, Miller seems much more optimistic about getting back to work on his famous series of action flicks, saying the following about his recent legal wrangle with the studio over Fury Road:

“It all started because of the chaos at Warner Bros. and not Kevin Tsujihara, it was pre all that. He wasn’t the antagonist, because a lot of people didn’t know what was going on and were not prepared to make a definitive stand; everybody was running around fearful, it seems, through three regimes. It was hard to get anyone’s attention, so we went to litigation. The chaos has stabilized and it’s become extremely positive as the dust seems to have settled after [the AT&T merger].”

Fans will no doubt be overjoyed to learn that Furiosa will be making a return to the big screen. Charlize Theron’s take on the character has acquired legendary status among action movie lovers, right alongside Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley. The events of the last flick left Furiosa leading her tribe and Max going off again on his own, but the tables can turn in an instant in the George Millerverse, and we imagine the sequels will reveal another villain as formidable as Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Immortan Joe.

Once again, it’ll no doubt be up to our heroes to team up and take on the new menace together. Hopefully though, we won’t have to wait another decade to see it happen.
