Warner Bros. is set to go all-in with Margot Robbie’s rendition of Harley Quinn, now that The Hollywood Reporter reveals the studio is cooking up early plans for a spinoff movie with Robbie’s maniac villainess at its core.

News surfaces a few months ahead of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, where the actress is poised to make her hotly-anticipated debut as Harleen Frances Quinzel. That’s a notable vote of confidence on Warner’s behalf, with Robbie also attached to produce the as-yet-untitled offshoot, which shouldn’t be confused as a solo movie.

That’s because, as THR points out, Harley Quinn isn’t the only DC character in line to feature in the embryonic flick, with rumors of Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad co-star Katana all reportedly in contention. As one would expect, exact details are being kept safely behind closed doors for the time being, though it’s understood an unnamed female scribe is attached to pen the project.

Sources close to Warner Bros. go on to reveal that Margot Robbie is the creative driving force behind the spinoff, after taking it upon herself to conduct her own crash course on all things Harley Quinn and DC Comics in general. Indeed, it was the actress’ preparation for Suicide Squad that helped spawn talks of this tantalizing new project, and though Ayer’s anti-hero feature will stay true to tradition by aligning Robbie’s sociopath as sidekick and love interest to Jared Leto’s Clown Prince of Crime, Harley Quinn’s future in Warner’s movie universe could become much more interesting should these early plans pan out as intended.

Suicide Squad opens on August 5 and, according to Robbie herself, Harley Quinn may just be the best character Task Force X has to offer.
