Is Mark Hamill Teasing The Title Of Star Wars: Episode IX?

Earlier tonight, Mark Hamill took to Twitter and seemingly teased the first word of the title for J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX.

For the first time in a long time, we’re currently more than a year removed from the next entry in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars saga.

Since The Force Awakens kicked off this new era of movies back in 2015, we’ve laid eyes on four – count ’em, four – new installments in the franchise, culminating in the box office disappointment that was Solo: A Star Wars Story.

It failed to light up the ticket booth in the way Lucasfilm would’ve hoped, leaving the fate of all other Anthology movies (see: Boba Fett and Obi-Wan) in serious doubt. But if one thing’s for certain, it’s that we’re more than 12 months away from our next trip to that galaxy far, far away, as production on Star Wars: Episode IX has only just recently kicked off.

That’s paved the way for a whole bunch of wild speculation and crazy fan theories, and one thing that’s being hotly contested right now is the film’s title. There’s no word yet on when the studio may reveal it, but we have reason to believe it could be soon, as Mark Hamill took to Twitter today to seemingly tease what it is. Hopping on his favorite social media platform, the actor wrote: THE (to be continued…).

There’s no confirmation on whether it’s the title that Hamill’s teasing us with here, but given that every film in the Sequel Trilogy so far has had a title beginning with “The,” it seems likely. Not to mention that the title for The Last Jedi was revealed in January 2017, ahead of its December 2017 release. So, it stands to reason that the official moniker for Episode IX could be unveiled in a similar timeframe, meaning we may learn of it in the next few months.

As for what it could possibly be, that’s hard to say at the moment given that Lucasfilm is keeping any and all plot details under lock and key, but it’s been reported that Abrams will pull from all Star Wars eras – prequels included – as he sets about closing out the Sequel Trilogy, which he’ll do when Episode IX breaks new ground for this most beloved franchise on December 20th, 2019.
