Marvel Clarifies The Pronunciation Of ‘Symbiote’ For Sony’s Venom Movie…Sort Of

Is it sym-bee-ote, or sym-bye-ote?

Amid all of the discussion and rampant speculation that emerged from Venom‘s first full trailer, Marvel fans were left puzzled by the pronunciation of ‘symbiote,’ given Jenny Slate’s corporate character insisted on adding a rather odd emphasis on the middle syllable.

It’s a small hang-up in what is undoubtedly a cracking trailer for Sony and Ruben Fleischer’s adult-oriented reboot, which promises to be every bit as dark and intense as Venom‘s original comic book run. Speaking of which, ComicBook.com has spotted a moment in “Amazing Spider-Man #800” where Marvel appears to clarify the pronunciation of ‘symbiote’. You know, just to set the record straight.

As you’ll see below, the issue features a brief exchange between Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson and Eddie Brock himself, who references the infamous symbiote while speaking on the phone.

Marvel Venom Symbiote

One thing’s for sure: Tom Hardy will be pulling double duty on Sony’s offshoot, given the British actor lends his voice to both Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote gnawing away at his fragile subconscious. It tees up a pretty complex dynamic for Hardy’s lead, though the actor has long proven his scenery-chewing talent thanks to The Dark Knight Rises, The Revenant, and Legend, in which he plays both Ronnie and Reggie Kray.

And for Venom, Tom Hardy will be bringing all of that experience to bear as he looks to wrangle one of the most beloved anti-heroes in all of comics. October 5th is the date for your diaries.
