Once the credits start rolling on the Avengers: Infinity War sequel, you can bet that much of the audience will remain glued to their chairs, anxious to see what exciting future for the MCU they could catch a glimpse of in an added bonus scene or two. But one user on Reddit has suggested that instead of setting up the next Spider-Man movie or offering a tease for some newly acquired Fox property, we instead see a black screen with the following mournful text in the middle:

STEVE ROGERS

1918-2019

The implication here is of course that Captain America passed away during the events of the film. It’s not hard to see why the Redditor singled out Steve for this suggestion, either, since forums and social media sites are already flooded with predictions of the character’s imminent demise.

Evans himself certainly added fuel to the speculation this month when he tweeted a message that seemed to imply he was now done playing Captain America, saying he was “Eternally grateful” for the memories he had collected in these past eight years. Though the star downplayed the idea that his tweet hinted at his departure at last weekend’s ACE Comic Con, this clarifying statement will probably do little to dissuade the theories.

Indeed, regardless of whether or not Steve is in the franchise’s future, Avengers 4 is set to bring some big changes to the cinematic universe while likely wrapping up the character arcs of many a Marvel regular. And we’ll see who’ll be left to carry the torch forward when the film hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
