Though we were also pretty darn excited to get some actual footage from the movie, one of the major reasons we were so hyped to see the first trailer for Avengers 4 was to find out what it was really called. Sure enough, when the preview dropped early Friday morning, we were treated to the reveal that it was officially titled Avengers: Endgame.
This resulted in a myriad reactions from Marvel fans. You see, months ago, Endgame was reported to be the title but we were told by various sources that this was not going to be the case. For the past month or so, we were running under the expectation that it would be named Avengers: Annihilation. So, the actual title was both a surprise and not a surprise at the same time.
Some took to social media to congratulate Marvel on playing us so well, saying the following:

Others, meanwhile, were all for it being called Endgame, with some wowed by its foreshadowing in Avengers: Infinity War and a few folks just preferring it to the previously-rumored names.

One person suggested that the title should be ever so slightly changed to reflect the fans’ mental state.

Alternatively, someone else believes there could be a deeper meaning to the title that might delight shippers of one of the MCU’s most popular couples.

As said above, Endgame was referenced in IW by Doctor Strange. However, that’s not the first time that the term’s been mentioned in the franchise. Back in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony Stark references the fact that there’s a greater threat coming from outer space, saying “that, up there, that’s the endgame.” Given that he’s been proven right, it seems like Avengers: Endgame is the perfect title for the film.
Congrats to Marvel for keeping it a secret all this time. All it took was a little white lie to keep us off the scent.
