Marvel Characters Are Now Becoming Popular Baby Names

It was bound to happen one day. After 2016 saw a slew of children named Daenerys, Khaleesi and Robb (!) after popular Game of Thrones characters, the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to have also now expanded to envelop the names of our offspring.

The U.S. Social Security Administration (a bit like S.H.I.E.L.D., presumably) released data of 2017’s 1,000 most popular baby names. Just like at the box office, it’s no surprise that Marvel are dominating the top spots, and the data has some…interesting results.

It looks like we’ll soon have a lot of friendly neighborhood Spider-Men and Spider-Women, as Parker takes first place with 1,487 females and 4,346 males being given the mantle. Inspired by Deadpool, Wade is the next most popular name for males with 899 parents not considering the inevitable back chat they’ll get. Natasha, meanwhile, takes the number one spot for the female only name, but this will surely get bumped when the Black Widow standalone movie begins filming next year.

The rest of the table looks a little like this:

  • Pepper, 121 female, 7 male
  • Loki, 5 female, 91 male
  • Valkyrie, 63 female
  • Marvel, 21 female, 29 male
  • Banner, 39 male
  • Rocket, 9 female, 28 male
  • Quill, 5 female, 15 male
  • Hawkeye, 6 male

Nice to see Hawkeye make the cut this time, eh?

With enough Marvel releases slated to keep film fans occupied until 2020 and beyond, we can at least look forward to exchanges like this entertaining us in the meantime: “Dad! Groot’s been picking on me again!” “Quiet down and eat your dinner, Thanos!”

Tell us, would you or have you named your offspring after a Marvel or other film character? If so, let us know in the comments section down below, and be sure to catch the MCU’s next release, Ant-Man and the Wasp, when it crawls into theaters on July 6th.
