Is there a future for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes beyond Avengers 4? You bet there is.
Though many had assumed once Infinity War and its aforementioned sequel had their time in the sun that’d be it for the gang, apparently that’s not the case. Marvel knows just how popular this particular superhero team is and as such, hope to keep them around for the long haul.
Or at least, that’s according to Disney CEO Bob Iger. During an earnings call earlier today, he revealed that not only do they plan on bringing us some “new Marvel franchises” beyond Avengers 4, but that there’s no reason to think that the Infinity War sequel will be the last time we see an Avengers movie.
“Given the popularity of the characters and given the popularity of the franchise, I don’t think people should conclude there will never be another Avengers movie,” said Iger.
While it’s not surprising that Marvel is looking to continue making films featuring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it does bring up a number of questions. For one, which characters will be on the roster in Phase 4? It’s no secret that most of the old guard are on their way out and after Thanos’ snap in Infinity War, a lot of the newbies are gone, too.
Granted, almost all of them will probably return in Avengers 4, but it’s still interesting to think what the team’s line-up will look like going into the future. Speaking of which, one popular fan theory puts forth the idea that Marvel’s actually planting some seeds for the New Avengers.
In the comics, New Avengers was a reboot of the Avengers title helmed by Brian Michael Bendis which starred a new version of the team including Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Spider-Woman. Obviously, we’re not suggesting that this team is going to be replicated on the big screen, but rather that the spirit of this revamp of the group could be evoked.
But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. For now, the important thing to keep in mind is that Avengers 4 may not necessarily be the last Avengers movie, and that’s hugely exciting.
