Dystopian sci-fi classic The Matrix recently celebrated its 20 year anniversary and without a doubt, there’s still a big market for its uber-cool brand of futuristic cyberpunk action. Unfortunately, talk of a potential reboot at Warner Bros. has somewhat simmered down as of late, and though there’s still a possibility that the studio is looking to pursue a sequel, nothing has been confirmed just yet.

It seems that the wheels are definitely turning, though, as according to John Wick: Chapter 3 director Chad Stahelski, there’s a new Matrix movie in the works and better yet, the Wachowskis are involved in it. He wouldn’t specify if it was a sequel or reboot, but told Yahoo the following:

“I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved,” Stahelski said. “And if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.”

Unfortunately, Stahelski was also unsure if the Wachowskis were directing or just involved in a producing capacity, but the fact that they’re on board at all is certainly encouraging to hear and should excite fans who’ve been waiting an awful long time to see this particular franchise return to the big screen.

And though it’s still unclear if this will be a reboot or a proper sequel, when you think about it, it only makes sense to dust off The Matrix. After all, the original trilogy grossed $1.8 billion worldwide and the first outing is widely considered to be one of the greatest action movies of all-time, not to mention also one of the most influential. It was a total game changer and still holds up even today.

There are a ton of different routes they could take with the project, too, as The Matrix literally created an entire reality filled with resistance societies, captive humans and digital beings. While this reality has been explored in the past with short prequel films, comic books and even video games, a new Matrix could certainly dig into this additional material, or even create something new to add to the universe. Whatever it is they’ve got cooked up though, it can only be a good thing that the property is finally returning.
