MCU cynics are convinced James Gunn and Disney are ruining a fan-favorite in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

'Swoll' Groot is quickly becoming the talk of the MCU town.

With the release of a new mind-melting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer during yesterday’s Super Bowl, MCU fans around the globe are gearing up for one last dance. Set to be the final installment in James Gunn’s space saga, it’s clear that things will never be the same for one of Marvel’s most iconic teams.

Judging from the spot above, a few guardians may not be making it back from this last adventure, and we’re not sure if our hearts can handle it. Interestingly, the fate of these unlikely friends isn’t the only thing on peoples minds, as many have taken to the Reddit to voice their concerns surrounding “Swoll” Groot.

If you’re going to be voiced by Vin Diesel, you might as well look the part.

The harsh reality is that as each new Marvel movie shakes up the status quo, there are going to be changes in order to keep things interesting. This might mean a new costume, piece of equipment, or an unknown ability — but in Groot’s case, it’s his whole body. Which if you think about it, makes sense. He is a tree person, after all.

One Groot defender goes as far to explain what so many of us seem to have forgotten about the lovable hero, and we couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Facts are facts people — the Groot we’re getting isn’t the Groot we knew, instead, he’s his son. Sort of a Groot Vol. 2, if you will. Which we’re totally cool with.

Allowing Groot to grow up with the Guardians of the Galaxy as his surrogate parents means that the buff Avengers we’ll be getting on the silver screen are sure to make us swoon. May 5 can’t come soon enough.
