Meet The Titular Robotic Stowaway In Poster For Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie

Neill Blomkamp certainly knows a thing or two about robotics. For his first two films (District 9 and Elysium), the South African director experimented with alien and futuristic human technology in his narratives, coating each picture with a spice of social commentary. But for Chappie, Blomkamp’s third feature, the filmmaker is set to diverge from those dystopian settings riddled with the have and have nots.

As you’ve no doubt guessed by now, Chappie is the name of the movie’s robotic protagonist, who will be motion captured by Blomkamp’s lucky charm and fellow South African, Shartlo Copley. And judging from this first-look poster, the film will look to play to a more comedic beat than the director’s previous work.

Hailed as an out-and-out prodigy, the film will follow Chappie as he is taken from his family at a young age and subsequently raised by a mysterious and dysfunctional couple (the rifle-wielding father figure says it all, really).

Joining Copley for Blomkamp’s production are Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Dev Patel. Moreover, Sony Pictures has confirmed that the first full-length trailer for Chappie will arrive tomorrow. So be sure to be check back then when we’ll have an early look at Blomkamp’s latest sci-fi outing.

Until then, you can check out the official blurb for the film down below.

After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot.

Chappie will release in theaters on March 27th, 2015.
