Men In Black 3 Neutralizes Friday Box Office Expectations

The long-awaited third entry in the Men In Black series earned $18 Million this past Friday, and though less than its predecessors - Men In Black earning $18.9 million on its opening Friday and Men In Black II earning $18.6 million - the movie is on its way to a $70 million Memorial Day weekend.

It may have seemed unlikely, but according to Box Office Mojo, Agents J and K managed to neuralize Marvel’s superheroes from the top box office spot this past Friday.

The long-awaited third entry in the Men In Black series earned $18 Million this past Friday, and though less than its predecessors – Men In Black earning $18.9 million on its opening Friday and Men In Black II earning $18.6 million – the movie is on its way to a $70 million Memorial Day weekend.

Meanwhile, The Avengers only fell 36% and took in an estimated $9.68 million, and at this point, the franchise has already taken in $486.4 million domestically and as I type this, is probably in the process of making it to $500 million.

Chernobyl Diaries opened in third place and took in $3.54 million, which isn’t great for a Summer horror film but it did make more than Splice, which took in $2.57 million on its opening day.

Elsewhere, Peter Berg is probably bellowing “you sunk my Battleship” as he reads the box office results; the already doomed blockbuster fell a whopping 66% and took in only $3 million.

Not doing much better was The Dictator, which fell 55% and made $2.78 million. Though on a lighter note, What to Expect When You’re Expecting had the best Friday of last week’s openers and earned $2.2 million.

Opening next week is Snow White and the Huntsman, which stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron in a gritty retelling of the Fairy tale. Also opening is Piranha 3DD, a sequel to the 2010 3D B-movie which was a remake of the 1978 movie Piranha and, as expected from the title, has more boobs and gore.

As for Men In Black III, only time will tell if it will live up to its predecessor’s box office results. I personally thought it was a great film and it deserves to do very well at the box office.

What about you? Did you enjoy Men In Black III?
