Sony has been trying to get a Metal Gear Solid movie made since 2012, but now the video game adaptation is closer than ever to getting off the ground, if recent reports are to be believed. We’re hearing today that the studio is hoping that The Kings of Summer director Jordan Vogt-Roberts will jump on board to helm the film. Talks are ongoing, but a deal is expected to be reached.
Vogt-Roberts became very in demand after the surprising success of his coming-of-age indie The Kings of Summer. Obviously, The Kings of Summer is very different from Metal Gear Solid, but Vogt-Roberts displayed a tremendous amount of talent behind the camera, and Sony was clearly impressed with what he accomplished on that film.
Initially released on Sony Playstation back in 1998, the video game Metal Gear Solid followed a soldier named Solid Snake, who infiltrated a weapons factory in order to prevent a terrorist group known as Foxhound from launching a devastating nuclear attack. Avi Arad is set to produce the film adaptation for Sony.
No release date has been set yet, but this is still early days for the project. What I’m most interested in, off the bat, is whether Sony will go for an R-rating for its adaptation of the famously violent video game franchise. I certainly hope so. Additionally, I’m curious about whether the studio has a cast in mind yet. New Regency and Ubisoft lucked out with Fassbender (for Assassin’s Creed) and Hardy (for Splinter Cell), two highly talented actors who have repeatedly proven their abilities to play gruff men of action in the past. For Solid Snake, the actor who comes most prominently to mind for me is definitely Frank Grillo, who was last seen menacing Captain America as Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Tell us, who is your dream pick for Solid Snake in a Metal Gear Solid film? Sound off below!
