Mike Newell has stepped in to direct On Chesil Beach, filling the void left by Sam Mendes. The Revolutionary Road helmer had to leave the film, which is based on Ian McEwan‘s 2007 novel of the same name, as he’s busy directing the upcoming James Bond movie Skyfall.

IndieWire is reporting that now that On Chesil Beach is being financed by StudioCanal, Neal Street Productions and BBC Films, Newell will be able to start production on the film once he finishes next fall’s Great Expectations. Mendes will remain with the film, which was initially set up at Focus Features, as a producer.

On Chesil Beach follows a young, virginal, newly married couple, Edward Mayhew and Florence Ponting, on their wedding night. The two are preparing to consummate their vows in their wedding suite on the Dorset Coast. Edward is anxious about his performance, while Florence is dreading the experience entirely. But given the era, they’re unable to talk about their reservations, which leads to a bitter fight.

Carey Mulligan was attached to star as Florence in On Chesil Beach in July 2010. However, Newell is reportedly looking for a new cast. Tell us, who do you think should portray the young couple? More importantly, with Newell now on board with new financiers, will the film finally move forward?
