A nuclear war is afoot, as the incredible first teaser for Mission: Impossible – Fallout proves, and Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is the only thing standing between world peace and total annihilation. Well, not quite.

As we alluded to before, Ethan is getting the gang back together, as Fallout welcomes the return of Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan, and, crucially, not Jeremy Renner (Infinity War), who has presumably swapped the IMF for the MCU following back-to-back appearances in Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation. Elsewhere on the casting front, there’s also room in the sequel’s ranks for three big-name newcomers: Henry Cavill (Justice League), Angela Bassett (Black Panther), and Vanessa Kirby.

As for this first trailer, it’s exactly what you’d expect. Much to the surprise of no one, Paramount has upped the ante yet again, teasing a bigger, more thrilling and more exhilarating sequel, with enough death defying stunts to please the fans. And though this is only our first preview of the film, we can already say with confidence that it’s going to do gangbusters at the box office when it opens this summer. This looks like an absolute adrenaline rush and we can’t wait to take the ride.

In a previous interview with Empire Magazine, director Christopher McQuarrie also shed some light on the film’s evocative title, which, sadly, does not spell a crossover with Bethesda’s apocalyptic video game series of the same name.

The title has multiple meanings in the film, from the literal to the figurative. There is the threat of nuclear terrorism hanging over the movie, which is the literal threat. There’s the notion that what’s happened in the movie is the end result of choices that Ethan Hunt has made in his life. It’s Ethan’s past come back to haunt him. It’s the fallout of all his good intentions.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout reports for duty on July 27th, and the IMF will never be the same again.
