‘Mortal Kombat 1’ is a terrible title, and the fanbase agrees with me

The kommunity has spoken!

Mortal Kombat is set to make a glorious, gore-soaked return later this year, with the 12th game in the mainline franchise gunning for a mid-September release on just about every console under the sun.

That being said, one might be forgiven for mistaking it as an Xbox exclusive, considering NetherRealm has opted to adopt Microsoft’s asinine titling method by naming the next entry Mortal Kombat 1. What’s next? Mortal Kombat 1 S?

Look, we all know you can’t go wrong with plopping Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and the rest of Mortal Kombat‘s kolorful kombatants into the arena for some good old-fashioned fatalities, but if your fanbase has taken to pulling a Mortal Kombat 9 and calling your game Mortal Kombat 12 anyway, maybe it’s time to revisit the marketing budget in some way, shape, or form.

On the other hand, maybe the majority of us Mortal Kombat fans are just too short-sighted to see the genius behind a title like Mortal Kombat 1, but in spite of one user’s observation, we’re not going to hedge our bets on that.

Perhaps the world will come to warm up to it in time, especially if it ends up pulling a Crisis on Infinite Earths by resetting the kanon of the Mortal Kombat world, but if that is the case, it means we missed out on the possibility of Mortal Kombat: Crisis on Infinite Earthrealms, and we’d have quite a bit of trouble forgiving NetherRealm for that.

Mortal Kombat 1 will release for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on Sept. 19.
