Jessica McNamee, best known for appearing in Battle of the Sexes and The Meg, has signed on as Sonya Blade while Josh Lawson, who starred in all five seasons of Showtime comedy House of Lies, will be getting fitted with the signature cybernetic eye of Kano. Lewis Tan, who can currently be seen in Netflix action series Wu Assassins, is also in talks to join the movie in an as-yet-unspecified role.

Interestingly, Tan already has previous involvement in the Mortal Kombat franchise having starred as Kung Jin in both Mortal Kombat X: Generations and Mortal Kombat: Legacy, although it remains to be seen if he’ll be reprising the role or playing a different character entirely.

The trio join Joe Taslim’s Sub-Zero, Sisi Stringer’s Mileena, Mehcad Brooks’ Jax, Ludi Lin’s Liu Kang and Tadanobu Asano’s Raiden as part of the ensemble, meaning that Mortal Kombat’s roster of fan-favorite characters isn’t too far away from completion with eight major parts now officially cast.

Greg Russo has been vocal that the movie will more than earn its R-rating, promising accurate cinematic depictions of the video game’s trademark Fatalities and a tone similar to that of Deadpool. Any previous attempts at rebooting Mortal Kombat over the last two decades have failed to come to fruition, so after such an arduous development process, here’s hoping that the creative team can deliver the pic that fans have been waiting for.
