Just when you thought you’d seen everything Disney had to offer as far as trailers and movie posters for upcoming The Muppets, out pops the final movie one-sheet. It looks like they smashed every puppet character imaginable into the frame, plus human stars Amy Adams and Jason Segel.
The Muppets franchise has a long honored history of self-referential humor and adorably quirky characters. Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy’s relationship is the stuff of legends, as are many of the other characters created by puppet master Jim Henson (Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal).
Past film installments in The Muppets world have included a humorous mix of the characters we know and love and various human celebrities. It’s become almost a signature of the films, and this one looks to be more star-studded than anything we’ve seen before, with guest roles including Mila Kunis, Selena Gomez, Emily Blunt, Neil Patrick Harris, Jack Black and Katy Perry (among many others).
James Bobin, the writer/director of the very quirky comedy series The Flight of the Conchords, should be right at home with the kind of humor that makes The Muppets so clever, and yet appealing to all ages. Funnyman Segel wrote the script with Nicholas Stoller. While I usually find Segel funny, Stoller wrote Get Him to the Greek which I found to be crude, self-indulgent, and unfunny. His Yes Man and Fun with Dick and Jane also don’t help allay my worries, but hopefully Segel will smooth out any moronic comedy bits from Stoller.
Here’s the new movie poster, and the official trailer. Check it out and tell us what you think.
