Nato And Remy’s Last Stand: 2013’s Independent Horror Hits

While keeping up with all the mainstream horror releases of any year might be hard enough, it's even harder to view all the lesser-known independent features that are released each and every week. While Video On Demend services give smaller films the audience they deserve, it's sure making life hectic for film fans and reviewers. It's nearly impossible to keep up with the always growing backlog of horror films, and even I can admit a few films were missed I would have loved to see - but both Remy and I did our damnedest to catch every film in our power. Dedication, thy name is insanity.

Why is it that they can do comedic horror so much better in the U.K than we do here? Here, we have movies like A Haunted House and Scary Movie 453, and in the U.K, they churn out winners like Shaun of the Dead, Attack the Block and Grabbers. It’s so brutally clear how far ahead of us they are in horror comedy genre. I know it’s an Irish film, but you get my point.

Grabbers is an alien invasion movie, but the hook is, you need to be drunk for the aliens not to suck your blood dry. This may seem like a fairly one-note idea that would run thin quickly, but you would be wrong in assuming so. This all takes place in Ireland, mind you, so the potential for jokes and barbs never expires. Somehow, they manage to have fun with the concept and keep it fresh and entertaining for the entirety of the film.

Oh, and mark my words, the lead in this film is destined to be a household name. Richard Coyl. Get familiar now, because I can smell this dude’s star rising in the next few years.

Horror in 2013 took itself pretty seriously, from the stunning slow-burner Stoker to the relentless pacing of the Evil Dead remake. Grabbers, on the other hand, is a nice break away from all that. It knows that sometimes, scares work better when they are sandwiched between laughs. The laughs disarm you, which make the screams that much more memorable.

Wow, if I write a few more lines like that, people may mistake me for a real writer.
