It was only about six weeks ago when District 9 director Neill Blomkamp teased us with some concept art that he had for a new Alien film. At the time, there was nothing official to lead us to believe he’d be involved in the franchise, but speculation still ran rampant when the director noted that it may come to fruition one day. Well, as it turns out, he was correct, as Blomkamp has confirmed that he’ll be developing the script and directing the next Alien instalment for 20th Century Fox.
Details are, of course, still scarce, but from what we know so far, Ridley Scott will be producing and the plot will take place after the events of Prometheus 2. While Sigourney Weaver did show up in the director’s original concept art, it’s unknown if she’ll be involved in the film in any capacity. However, she does have a role in Blomkamp’s upcoming Chappie, so you never know.
Right now, it looks as if 20th Century Fox is looking to expand the Alien franchise and turn the whole thing into a Marvel Cinematic Universe-esque project, which is fine. It’s a smart move given the possibilities for where this series can go, and if they handle it correctly, it can definitely be very successful.
As for Blomkamp, he’s a very talented filmmaker and even though he failed to impress with his previous effort, Elysium, I’m fairly confident that he’s the right person to breathe some new life into the classic franchise.
Tell us, what do you make of all this? Are you excited to see Neill Blomkamp step into the Alien universe? Sound off below!
Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien
