EW has learned that director Neill Blomkamp and actor Sharlto Copley will be teaming up for yet another outing with the sci-fi comedy Chappie. Unfortunately, we have absolutely no details on the film other than it will have an “unusual setting.” District 9 scribe Terri Tatchell has written the script and filming will take place in Johannesburg.
It may be a bit premature but hell, I’m already putting Chappie on my radar. Sure, we know next to nothing about it but it’s a Neill Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley film. The duo took the world by storm when they gave us District 9, one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade. They also have Elysium on the horizon, which looks just as groundbreaking as its predecessor. Blomkamp and Copley are clearly on a role right now and to hear that they’re teaming up again is just about the best news I’ve heard all week.
Hopefully we’ll get more info on this one soon. I’m guessing once Elysium hits theatres this Summer more details will start to emerge about Chappie. Until then, all we can do is speculate. I’m betting though that now that Copley is signed on, you’ll see some big names start to circle this one. When it comes to the sci-fi genere, there are few people as exciting as Blomkamp and after he impresses with Elysium, which he will undoubtedly do, his stock will be even higher.
