We learned late last week that Captain America: Civil War would pick up the mantle as the cover star of this month’s Empire magazine, teasing a whole host of new information regarding Joe and Anthony Russo’s Herculean power struggle.

Doing good on that promise, today brings forth a series of new images for the superhero threequel that not only take you up close and personal with Frank Grillo’s formidable Crossbones, but they also reveal the identity of Martin Freeman’s character, Everett Ross.

How exactly the Sherlock star would fit into Marvel’s grand ensemble has been the topic of heated discussion. At least now we know Freeman’s Everett Ross is a member of the Joint Counter Terrorist Centre, pictured here alongside Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter.

Perhaps what’s most interesting is that, in the comics, Everett is traditionally associated with the state of Wakanda (read: Black Panther), indicating that the actor’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be much bigger than we first anticipated.

Elsewhere, the gallery above also includes fresh looks at a battle-ready Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), along with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) conflicted heroes. Finally, Empire also pulled back the curtain on a cracking limited edition subscriber’s cover, and it’ll be available to pick up from February 25 if you’re wanting some eye candy to pour over before Civil War opens in a few months’ time.

Captain America: Civil War will find Earth’s Mightiest Heroes divided come May 6.
