For a studio that used to announce years’ worth of upcoming movies at their own Apple-like event, Marvel’s been keeping pretty tight-lipped on their future phase of films. Sure, we know a little bit about what’s to come, like The Eternals and Shang-Chi are both set to make their big screen debuts, and a Black Widow standalone pic is in development, too, but we’ve barely heard a word about follow-ups to their past solo successes like Black Panther and Doctor Strange. Now that Endgame has had its time in the sun though, we expect that to change very quickly.
In fact, if new rumors are to be believed, Doctor Strange 2, which is deep into development at Marvel with director Scott Derrickson and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill attached, may be with us on November 5th, 2021. This comes from an unverified leak – the same one which shared the Ant-Man 3 release date – and as such, we advise taking it with a grain of salt. That being said, it’s not too hard to believe.
After all, with the stars, writer and director of the sequel already set, it’s easy to see Doctor Strange 2 entering production shortly ahead of a late 2021 release. Not to mention that given how popular Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme is, we imagine the studio will want to bring us more of him sooner rather than later. Then again, with Marvel still keeping quiet on their Phase 4 plans, it’s impossible to say for sure what’ll happen.
In any case, we imagine that whenever we do see him next, Doctor Strange will take on a much more prominent role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, someone’s going to need to fill the void left by Tony and Cap after Endgame brought their stories to an end, right?
