New Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Image Introduces C2-B5

It seems not all of the new droid characters we'll be meeting on our return journey to the galaxy far, far away will be on the side of the heroes. Following a new batch of official Rogue One: A Star Wars Story stills from Empire Magazine, the latest episode of The Star Wars Show web series has debuted our first glimpse of Imperial astromech droid C2-B5, AKA evil R2-D2.

Okay, so nobody is actually calling him that, but one look at the little fella should make it very clear that he’s essentially just Artoo with a black paint-job. The reason they look so similar is that they’re both part of the astromech family – utility droids used primarily to maintain machinery. Other astromech droids in the saga include R5-D4, R2-KT and The Force Awakens‘ BB-8, who’s actually a second generation model.

At any rate, aside from a few brief glimpses of unnamed astromechs in the earlier films, C2 here is the first of his kind that’ll be working for the bad guys. How much of a role he’ll wind up playing in the story remains to be seen, however, and there’s always the chance he won’t even make the cut – just ask Constable Zuvio.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story blasts into theaters on December 18th.
