Watch the throne Hollywood, because Alan Taylor – known for his work on Game of Thrones and the upcoming Thor: The Dark World – has been announced to direct Terminator 5, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Sources tell Variety that Taylor won the bid for the movie over a number of other big directors. Life of Pi helmer Ang Lee was targeted early on to direct the film, but a deal was never reached. Taylor also beat out the likes of Looper director Rian Johnson and Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve.

This will be Alan Taylor’s first foray into the sci-fi genre. He’s made a career in directing TV dramas like Sex and the City, Mad Men and The Sopranos. He then directed and co-produced Game Of Thrones and played a large role in the hit fantasy series’ second season. It appears that Taylor is finally ready to make the transition to blockbuster movie director with Thor: The Dark World and now, Terminator 5.

Although it feels like yesterday, it’s been over 20 years since the original Terminator movie and, after the very forgettable Terminator Salvation left a bad taste in moviegoers’ mouths, now is the perfect time to stage a comeback. In June it was announced that the new Terminator would be the beginning of a brand new trilogy. At first it was unclear if a 66-years-young Schwarzenegger would in fact “be back” for the reboot, but the man himself confirmed his return to the beloved franchise that established him as a star.

The screenplay for Terminator 5 is being penned by Shutter Island writer Laeta Kalorgridis and Patrick Lussier, who wrote and directed the Nicolas Cage film Drive Angry.

Terminator 5 is currently set for a June 26, 2015 release date.
