Planting Matt Damon’s botanist Mark Watney into the stickiest of sticky situations, The Martian will see his astronaut stranded on the Red Planet after a raging martian storm throws a spanner in the works of an interplanetary mission. Commanded by Jessica Chastain’s stern captain Melissa Lewis, Watney’s only hopes of returning home lie with the Ares-3, the same crew that left him behind after he was presumed dead.

After successfully beaming a rudimentary SOS signal across the solar system, Damon’s lone protagonist must hunker down for the four-year wait as the ship makes the arduous return trip to Mars, against the orders of Jeff Daniels’ Teddy Sanders and the rest of NASA, going off the most recent trailers.

Adapted from Andy Weir’s eponymous best-seller, The Martian is fast becoming one of the most anticipated films of the fall season, with a stellar story and an equally stellar cast to match. Joining Damon, Daniels and Chastian for the drama are Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Ant-Man‘s Michael Pena, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Donald Glover.

Due to make its premiere at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival, it won’t be long before we begin to hear the early verdict on Ridley Scott’s latest stint in the sci-fi genre.

The Martian hits theaters nationwide on October 2.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.
