One of the most eagerly anticipated trailers that’s going to come from San Diego Comic-Con has got to be the one for Thor: Ragnarok. Everything we’ve seen so far has knocked our socks off and we see no reason why that trend won’t continue. But, to whet our appetite until later tonight, we’ve got this seriously cool new one sheet – which you can check out down below.
In a Russian Doll configuration, we see Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and Anthony Hopkins’ Odin. Fitting all these characters onto one poster would generally mean a dull as dishwater array of floating heads (usually wreathed in photoshopped sparks). But, in what might well be a good sign for the film’s quality, whoever designed this has picked an excellent layout, symmetrically nestling the characters within one another to striking effect.
It bears more than a passing resemblance to the psychedelic panel layouts of Jack Kirby – all too appropriate given that he’s inspired much of the visual design of the film. In fact, if you check out the walls of Grandmaster’s room in the last trailer, you’ll notice that he has actual Kirby artwork on them.
Besides, it’s just nice to see something as outright colorful and straight up fun looking as this. Let’s face it, both previous Thor movies have been the runts of the MCU litter, with Thor: The Dark World generally considered the most forgettable effort by Marvel Studios to date. Will Thor: Ragnarok break the trend? Based on this poster things look good, but we’ll know more when we see the next trailer later tonight.
