News has come to us from Variety (via The Playlist) that Nick Cassavetes has signed on to direct Twilight star Kristen Stewart in what is being described as a gritty action film titled Cali. Cassavettes, who has a wide range of directing styles, having crafted films from The Notebook to Alpha Dog, will direct the script written by 30 Minutes Or Less writer Michael Diliberti.

Check out the plot summary below.

“Mya (Stewart), who pairs up with her boyfriend Chris to make a fake snuff film which they sell for a wad of cash before beating it out of the San Fernando Valley. Years later, she’s forced to head back to save her younger sister, but to do so she will have to face ‘angry former business partners, homicidal porn stars, stoner vet techs, an unstoppable killing machine in a cowboy hat’ as well as keep a handle on her relationship with Chris.”

Cassavettes is a very versatile director and his work is usually pretty entertaining. Having not seen any of the Twilight films, I try to judge the actors regardless of their attachment to the franchise, and so far having seen Welcome To The Rileys and The Runaways, I really like Stewart’s work. She’s clearly trying to escape the Twilight bubble, like her co-star Robert Pattinson, and I think she’ll be able to.

Cali will begin production at the end of the Summer and is eyeing a 2013 release.

We will bring you more news on the film as it arises.
