Nicole Kidman Wants Colin Firth For Before I Go To Sleep

Nicole Kidman has worked with her share of sexy leading men: Hugh Jackman, Ewan MacGregor, George Clooney, Daniel Day-Lewis, and, of course, Tom Cruise before he went insane. But looking through her filmography, I realize that Kidman only rarely works with the same leading man twice, Tom excepted.

Well, Nicole Kidman hopes to change all that now. According to The Playlist, Kidman wants to reteam with her The Railway Man co-star Colin Firth in the upcoming thriller Before I Go To Sleep. That would make the second time that Firth has played her husband. Ooooo!

Before I Go To Sleep is based on S.J. Watson’s book and follows a woman who wakes up each morning with no memory. Her husband tells her that she’s suffered a trauma and should stay at home, which she does. I mean, why wouldn’t you if you were married to Colin Firth? Until one day she decides to see a doctor (played by a recently cast Mark Strong) who tells her to tape her thoughts on a recorder and play them back. Hence she discovers that all is not as it seems and her husband might not be her husband at all (!).

Honestly, that sounds a bit silly, a bit hokey, a bit predictable, a bit … stupid. It also sounds like an adult version of a Goosebumps book, with the requisite twist we can see coming a mile away.

There’s always an ‘on the other hand’ to these kinds of plots, though. The film has already attracted Kidman and Strong, and is being directed by Rowan Joffe, who did the Brighton Rock remake. If Nicole Kidman can get Firth in on the deal, that would be an impressive enough cast to get me into the theatre.

We’ll get to see Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman together before long, with The Railway Man due to hit in 2013. If their chemistry is good, who knows? Maybe we’ve got a new screen team on our hands.

As always, we’ll keep an eye on casting decisions for Before I Go To Sleep as they are made.
