The Scandinavian thriller – or Nordic noir, to use the oft-cited term – tends to be fertile ground for Hollywood studios searching for raw material to transform into full-length feature films. In some cases, that process involves a tit-for-tat remake of an existing property (see: David Fincher’s Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) while others, like Morten Tyldum’s phenomenal Headhunters, take the foundations of a literary thriller and constructs a tense, nail-biting thriller for a worldwide audience. Tomas Alfredson’s The Snowman will be hoping to do likewise later in 2017.

Adapted from Jo Nesbø’s novel of the same name – Nesbø is also the brains behind the Headhunters book, Hodejegerne – Alfredson’s feature film finds Michael Fassbender in the role of detective Harry Hole, who takes on the case of a missing woman after discovering her pink scarf on a snowman. Also starring Rebecca Ferguson and Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Snowman heralds Alfredson’s first foray behind the lens since Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and already the Fassbender-led noir has emerged as one of the more intriguing releases of 2017.

There’s still no trailer to relay just yet, but Total Film has unearthed a series of photos for The Snowman, which see Michael Fassbender’s brilliant detective on the case. But Jack Reacher this is not; in a previous interview with Digital Spy, the Oscar nominee compared his lead character to a “very flawed genius,” who is simply out to do his job and do it well. Story details remain under lock and key for the moment, but we’ll keep you updated as Alfredson’s adaptation nears release.

The Snowman is expected to march into theaters sometime this year. The first wave of high-res photos so often precede a trailer reveal, so keep it locked to We Got This Covered.
