The misery keeps on piling up for The Flash, with the DCU’s catastrophic misfire continuing to disappoint on virtually every level, a major comedown for a movie that was being dubbed as one of the greatest comic book adaptations of all-time a matter of weeks ago.
Having suffered a disappointing domestic opening weekend that turned out to be even lower when the official numbers came in, Andy Muschietti’s long-awaited blockbuster has been lurching from bad to worse ever since. At this point it’s barely outpacing Green Lantern – one of the most infamous bombs there’s ever been – but that still isn’t the end of it.
While The Flash may be on course to win the box office for a second consecutive frame in the face of competition that ranges from the dwindling to the non-existent, it’s already suffered its first fall from the number one spot. On Wednesday, the multiversal epic dropped down to third on the daily earnings charts, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse once more returning to the summit.
If that wasn’t unfortunate enough, it even slipped below Elemental, which itself has been designated as Disney’s latest high-profile animated failure after crashing and burning in its first weekend. The prognosis now is that The Flash can count its lucky stars if it can even cross $300 million globally, which was borderline unthinkable this time last month.
With two more DCU releases still to come, though, the franchise’s bad year retains the possibility of somehow continuing to get significantly worse between now and December.
