Warner Brothers has released the first official stills of Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby, based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Tobey Maguire stars as Nick, the novel’s narrator and honest midwesterner. Nick moves to Long Island, where his flighty socialite cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan) also lives with her husband. Nick’s neighbor is the mysterious and very wealthy Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) who has ties to Daisy’s past. If you’ve ever taken a high school English class, you already know this story, but you should still be excited for this movie. There’s never been a great film adaption of the novel (sorry, Paul Rudd), and this might be the one to do it.

The photos show Nick, Daisy and Gatsby at an elaborate party and Daisy in Gatsby’s arms.

I wasn’t thrilled about DiCaprio being cast as Gatsby until I saw these pictures. He perfectly embodies Gatsby’s unattainable  dream of loving Daisy, and I can’t wait to see it all fall apart. Mulligan also captures Daisy’s carefully practiced boredom beautifully, and I thought Maguire would make a great Nick from the beginning.
