The independent film director, Jim Jarmusch, will curb our appetites for a vampire love story with his next project, Only Lovers Left Alive, starring Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as the movie’s protagonists. With the release of its new official still, we’re given a first glance at the film’s vampire lovers.
Only Lovers Left Alive revolves around two vampires, Adam and Eve, who have been lovers for centuries. With names like that, one can detect the slight emphasis on how long these vampires have been around if they’re based on their biblical names. Adam, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston, is an underground musician who’s jaded by the antics of human society. His relationship with Eve becomes disrupted when her wild younger sister, Ava played by Mia Wasikowska, joins their company.
The film’s premise seems slightly reminiscent of another vampire horror movie, titled The Hunger, that featured a love triangle. Jarmusch, whose movies tend to focus more on character development over plot, describes his upcoming movie as a crypto-vampire love story. Thus, we can expect Only Lovers Left Alive to be thematically rich, with most of its plot displayed with visual motifs that are bathed in subtle, contemplative tones.
The picture provides a look at the primary characters in Only Lovers Left Alive, without exactly divulging anything about the vampires or the movie’s plot. You can’t even tell they’re vampires, as there are no fangs displayed.
Everything seems mysterious, except their body language, which gives us a little insight to their relationship, with Adam wrapping his arms around his lover in a comfortable embrace, probably establishing that she is his and no one else’s. Or that he only really cares about her than anything else happening in his surroundings. On the other hand, Eve’s body language seems unconcerned but slightly open. Their sunglasses pretty much conceal their facial expressions, and the background doesn’t really disclose their environment, but they could be in a bar or a club.
Nevertheless, the photo from Only Lovers Left Alive increases our intrigue to uncover what Jarmusch has in store for us with his love story. I’m definitely excited to see Hiddleston in his new vampire role.
What do you think of the picture? Is this a movie that appeals to you?
