Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has really crept up on the world, with the film set to make its bow in theaters less than a month from now, but a short wait is anything but a bad thing. Now that we’ve exited the Michael Bay era, Revenge of the Fallen and all, it will be interesting to see how the seventh installment takes shape in this brand new age for the beloved franchise.
Longtime fans of the sci-fi series will be eating extra well, with the likes of the Maximals and Unicron entering the fray this time around, but the Autobots have a few new tricks up their sleeve as well, such as Mirage, the hologram-projecting, Porsche-morphing spy working under Optimus Prime, voiced by none other than Pete Davidson.
Davidson’s name alone suggests that Mirage is going to inject some rather cheeky energy into the Autobot team, and one would be right to assume that; in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) remarked the approach to Mirage that Davidson suggested, namely the head-turning combination of “The Mask meets Bugs Bunny.”
“Personality-wise, he’s an outcast and a rebel. He’s a good character, but sometimes he toes the line. Mirage just goes with the flow. He’s a live-in-the-moment type of guy. As much as everyone’s talking about the past or the future, he’s living in the now. And honestly, it’s weird, I feel like that’s Pete Davidson.”
Judging by the trailers we’ve seen, it looks like Mirage will be roping Noah Diaz, Anthony Ramos’ human protagonist, into the conflict between the Autobots, Maximals, Terrorcons, and Predacons, so we can expect to get acquainted with Davidson’s Autobot early and often, and given the odds of him being an absolute scene-stealer, we’re all for it.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will release to theaters on June 9.
