As we reported previously, the Scottish star has reunited with The Thick of It creator Armando Ianucci for The Personal History of David Copperfield, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel David Copperfield in which he plays the role of Mr. Micawber. As the movie takes place in 19th century London, then, these first photos from the set see Capaldi decked out in some eccentric Victorian threads, which look very much like an outfit the Doctor would wear.

With his large top hat, pink waistcoat and burgundy coat, you could easily mistake these snaps as throwback photos from his time on Doctor Who. Fans will also note that the actor still has his big, bouffant hair that defined the Twelfth Doctor in his later seasons.

Part of what makes his get-up here seem so Doctorish as well is that Capaldi’s Time Lord visited Victorian England twice during his tenure on the show. First in his debut episode, 2014’s “Deep Breath,” and then again in 2017’s “Thin Ice.” Both times, the Doctor dressed for the occasion in some vintage threads. What’s more, his coat in David Copperfield matches the shade of the velvet jacket he often donned in Doctor Who.

Aside from Capaldi, The Personal History of David Copperfield includes some superb British talent in its cast. The Oscar-nominated Dev Patel stars in the title role while Doctor Strange‘s Tilda Swinton and Benedict Wong, Spectre‘s Ben Whishaw and Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s Gwendoline Christie also featuring in supporting parts. It’s currently filming in Hull, UK and will release sometime in 2019.
