Though his place in the director’s chair is still to be confirmed, director Peyton Reed has offered his two cents on Ant-Man and the Wasp, and why he wants to take its two title stars to “weird, unique and different territory.”

Currently pegged for a release in 2018, Marvel is yet to divulge much information about the superhero sequel, though that hasn’t prevented reported circling regarding Reed and possibly Adam McKay’s involvement in the script department. As you may recall, the fallout between Edgar Wright and Marvel led to McKay penning the screenplay for the original film alongside star Paul Rudd, but this time around, Reed is already dreaming big.

He is, of course, still in the thick of talks to helm the high-profile sequel, but the director is overly confident of securing the gig: “We’re [still] in negotiations, but I think it’s looking pretty good,” he revealed to Yahoo. After all, this is the filmmaker would created a half-billion juggernaut at the box office on the back of a $130 million budget – relatively small, all things considered.

As for his early vision of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Peyton Reed is confident that, with the origins story now in place and many of the character arcs mapped out, he’ll have the ability to take more creative risks in a few years’ time.

“I think one of the appealing things about coming back for a sequel is to be able to build it from the ground up this time,” Reed said. “Also, [there’s] stuff that we clearly set up in the first movie that we want to pay off and have fun with in the second movie. Since we know [the characters’] origins, we can go in some weird, unique and different territory.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp will welcome Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly back as the bite-sized heroes when Marvel’s follow-up scurries into theaters on July 6, 2018.
