Pierce Brosnan Shuts Down Deadpool 2 Murmurings: “Nothing’s Come My Way Yet”

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Pierce Brosnan has addressed those Deadpool 2 rumors linking him with the coveted role of Cable.

To say that the Deadpool 2 rumor mill has been operating at full tilt may read as something of an understatement – even before the cracking teaser trailer that aired alongside Logan, the Internet was awash with unsubstantiated tidbits and claims – but it seems at least one morsel of information is wildly off base, and it involves Pierce Brosnan.

Appearing on the latest installment of Jimmy Kimmel Live (via Screen Rant), the Irish actor addressed the storm of speculation that gripped the Internet soon after his seemingly innocuous photo with Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds – a photo in which the trio created the iconic ‘three wise monkeys’ pose. That was back in January and since then, there have been scores of follow-up rumors and even pieces of concept art designed to illustrate Pierce Brosnan in the role of the hulking mercenary. But at least based on the actor’s latest interview, Brosnan won’t be starring opposite Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With a Mouth anytime soon.

Per Jimmy Kimmel:

“Not true. Nothing’s come my way yet. It’s completely made up. We were sitting waiting for a plane, the three of us, and the guy said, ‘Quick. Let’s get a photograph. Jump in the middle.’ Mr. Reynolds said, ‘Let’s do three wise monkeys,’ put it out there, and it went viral.”

There’s always the possibility that Brosnan’s comments are simply smoke and mirrors, but when you consider that Michael Shannon has emerged as the frontrunner to land the gig – Brad Pitt was also said to be in the running early on before the actor dropped out due to scheduling conflicts – it’s not too difficult to see how Pierce Brosnan’s involvement in Deadpool 2 was merely a throwaway rumor that got out of hand. Meanwhile, the sequel’s other high-profile role (read: Domino) was filled by Zazie Beetz.

Cramming in more action than the first, Deadpool 2 is still teetering on the verge of production. A Cable-related announcement is expected imminently, at which point we’ll finally have a better sense of what to expect from the Merc’s second big-screen adventure.
