Considering the rushed production schedule director Mathew Vaughan suffered at the hands of Fox for the superhero prequel X-Men: First Class, it was rather remarkable how excellent the film turned out to be. After the happy news broke that Vaughan would return to write and direct the follow-up, we now have some details regarding just what the sequel may chronicle.

There have been clashing reports regarding who would be the focus of “First Class 2” ranging from freshly minted villain Magneto, to recently crippled psychic Professor X. Well, whoever the lead may be, a source told AICN that they noticed that Fox had registered the title Days of Future Past with the MPAA Title Registration Bureau.

Likely meaning nothing to the non-comic nerd (of which I am one) allow me to elaborate: Days of Future Past is a two-arc issue where the mutant Kitty Pryde (who was portrayed by Ellen Page in X-Men: The Last Stand) transfers her future mind to her past self in order to help change events that lead to a mass mutant round-up (and subsequent mass imprisonment).

So if this is indeed how the story of the sequel will unfurl, the events of the film may very well cause rifts in time leading to the future we know in the original “X-Men” trilogy (or perhaps X-Men: First Class was the beginning of an alternate reality).

Whatever the case, a mind-bending plot sounds pretty darn cool and I’m sure we’ll learn more as “First Class 2” ramps up to its January 2013 shoot date.
