Even as they can still look fondly back on his colorful coming-of-age tale Moonrise Kingdom, which succeeded in 2012 both at the box office and with critics, fans of director Wes Anderson can also start getting excited for his newest project, a stylish 1920s-set dramatic comedy called The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Today, a gorgeous first poster for the film landed online, and it’s everything you’d expect from an Anderson poster.
Grandiose, idiosyncratic, decadent and peculiar are terms as aptly applied to Anderson himself as to the poster. The American auteur has earned the adoration of critics for his whimsical storytelling and layered, symmetrical imagery in films like The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore and Fantastic Mr. Fox. However, Moonrise Kingdom marked the first time Anderson’s vision has yielded big box-office figures – the film pulled in record-breaking numbers at its four initial locations over one weekend, then sat atop the box-office during the week when it opened wide.
It’s safe to say that Anderson is enjoying his recent, surprising career success, and audiences who admired his distinctive style in Moonrise Kingdom are in for a treat with The Grand Budapest Hotel. The upcoming film will be the first entirely written by Anderson himself.

The Grand Budapest Hotel tells of a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars and his friendship with a young employee who becomes his trusted protégé. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting, the battle for an enormous family fortune and the slow and then sudden upheavals that transformed Europe during the first half of the 20th century.
The Grand Budapest Hotel will star Ralph Fiennes, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Saoirse Ronan, F. Murray Abraham, Jeff Goldblum, Tilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson, Tom Wilkinson, Adrien Brody, Edward Norton, Harvey Keitel, Bob Balaban, Léa Seydoux, Mathieu Amalric and Gabriel Rush.
That cast includes a terrific mix of frequent Anderson collaborators (Schwartzman, Murray), fresh faces for the director (Fiennes, Law, Ronan) and just plain fresh faces (Seydoux, Rush), which has me very excited to see this film.
The poster promises that the movie will be premiering sometime in 2014, and many have speculated that a Cannes opening is likely.
