Power Rangers May Be Saved By Its Home Video Sales

Ahead of the release of Power Rangers, Lionsgate had big plans for the franchise. Apparently, they were hoping to make at least 6 more films before moving into spinoff territory and spawning an entire cinematic universe. And while the studio hasn’t canceled those plans just yet, the chances of them pushing ahead with that blueprint don’t look too good. Reviews weren’t terrible, to be fair, but the blockbuster failed to ignite the box office like the filmmakers no doubt hoped it would.

Currently, it’s sitting at $140 million off a $100 million budget. That’s hardly impressive, and with talk of those planned sequels possibly being cancelled, it looks like it might be one and done for the rebooted franchise. Or is it? We always knew that the film wasn’t finished earning money just because its theatrical run was at an end, but from the sounds of it, the blockbuster may have more legs than expected.

Now available on Blu-ray/DVD, Power Rangers is doing quite well for itself. It currently sits as the #1 release in the country, knocking off titles like John Wick: Chapter 2 and Beauty and the Beast and grabbing the top spot when it comes to both rentals and sales. Will it be enough to warrant a sequel, though?

Well, that remains to be seen, but it’s definitely possible. When combined with the merchandise and toy sales, the studio’s made a lot more than just the $140 million they saw from the box office and this wouldn’t be the first time that a film’s Blu-ray/DVD release has been enough to push a sequel into production, so you never know.

Only (morphin’) time will tell, of course, but until we hear more, let us know in the comments section if you’d be up for seeing another Power Rangers movie.
