Questions already being asked about the unanimous outpouring of enthusiasm for ‘The Flash’

Is Keaton just a catchphrase machine?

The Flash has been coming for an incredibly long time, beset by production difficulties, COVID interrupting the shoot, and the headline-grabbing antics of star Ezra Miller. But throughout all this, Warner Bros. has remained steadfastly enthusiastic about the project, all bolstered by rave reviews from test audiences.

We’ll find out for ourselves in just a few weeks, but we now have one take that seems to confirm many of the more pessimistic predictions:

This sounds fair, and with the movie containing two Ezra Millers, both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck’s Batmen, Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, and Michael Shannon’s Zod, all wrapped up in a time-tangled dimension hopping caper, we’re not surprised to hear that the pacing can be somewhat choppy.

However, it’s the criticism of Keaton’s Batman as a catchphrase machine that has us on edge. We can’t deny we got a nerdy thrill from hearing him say “Let’s get nuts” in the recent trailer, but we’re hoping for something a teeny bit more substantial than him just dropping a bunch of references and then grapple-hooking away. After all, it’s been more than 30 years since Batman Returns, and I want to know what the he’s been doing all this time.

Despite all this, The Flash is too much of a superhero smörgåsbord to resist. We’ll be there on opening night, if only to see the last few embers of the SnyderVerse still burning fiercely away before James Gunn pours a bucket of water on them for good.

The Flash hits theaters on Jun 15.
