No, it’s no longer a rumor or mere speculation anymore. The cat’s out of the bag. About a week ago, Joss Whedon teased a possible appearance by the infamous super-powered siblings in The Avengers 2, but EW’s sources recently revealed that the movie will feature both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

As always, producer Kevin Feige refused to confirm anything. “I’m not confirming or denying. The draft could change six months from now,” he said. Of course he would say that. In fact, we were counting on it. We’ve been hearing the “I’m not confirming or denying” bit since 2007, when we didn’t even know whether Captain America or Thor would get their own movies. It’s pretty clear what this means.

Nevertheless, Joss Whedon or Feige himself might have a change of heart and end up saving the characters for a later film in the franchise, though that would be a terribly silly move — due to insanely complicated rights issues that we sincerely do not want to delve into. In short, both Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox are able to use Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch however they see fit, and if you haven’t heard, the latter are currently exploiting the X-Men franchise, which just so happens to prominently feature the aforementioned characters.

Besides, it is known that Janet van Dyne (a.k.a. The Wasp) was going to be play a key role in the first Avengers film, but was ultimately dropped in favor of Black Widow (although she will surely turn up in Ant-Man). Could this happen to the brother-sister duo? If so, who could end up replacing them?

The Avengers 2 will be written and directed by Joss Whedon, and is slated to hit theaters on May 1st, 2015. It is expected to wrap up Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man will open Phase 3.
