Rambo 5 is out of the starting blocks.
Last month, we saw Sylvester Stallone hitting the gym to bulk up for the return of John Rambo after ten years away, followed by shots of the character looking like he’s gone full cowboy. This time, he’ll be taking on a Mexican drug cartel, with the hero on a rescue mission to save a young girl. That was a pretty vague synopsis, but today we know a little more thanks to the casting announcement that Paz Vega has joined the project
She’ll be playing Carmen Delgado, a reporter who specializes in covering the Mexican drug trade. As revenge for her coverage, the cartels kidnap her younger half-sister, causing Carmen to team up with Rambo as the pair battle to save her. Sure, Sylvester Stallone’s now 72-years-old, but if I were a cartel member I’d be pretty worried if I knew that Rambo was after me. I mean, did you see what he did to those Burmese soldiers in the last film?
From what we understand, the pic will shoot in Bulgaria and Spain, the former location standing in for the southern USA and Mexico. Adrian Grunberg’s directing, who has an impressive resume as a second-unit director on Narcos and must know this subject matter pretty well. We don’t have an official title for the film just yet, though in an early stage of production it was called Rambo: Last Blood.
If that remains the case, it doesn’t bode well for John Rambo popping up in a future installment (perhaps terrorists could take over his nursing home?). Still, if anyone’s going to go out in an incredible blaze of glory, it’s got to be him.
