Crime dramas have always been a favorite of mine, so it should come as no surprise that The Place Beyond The Pines is looking very appealing right now. The upcoming film from Derek Cianfrance already has Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, Greta Gerwig and Bradley Cooper in place to star and now Variety tells us that actor Ray Liotta will join the film as a “fierce, crooked officer on the force.” With a vast resume of movie credits that have him in the role of a policeman of some sorts, Liotta should be right at home here.
While his career has been less than illustrious since Goodfellas, it’s still always nice to see Liotta show up on the silver screen. He joins an already fantastic cast and with his involvement, this one has serious potential. As mentioned before, Ray Liotta still hasn’t made a film as good as Goodfellas but this may finally give him the chance to star in a winner.
The film has follows a “motorcycle racer – played by Ryan Gosling – who starts robbing banks and goes head-to-head with a young cop – played by Bradley Cooper – who wants to take him down.” When I spoke to Derek a few months back, he told me that:
I’m in the process of financing a film called The Place Behind The Pines which is a script that I’ve been working on for about four years. Ryan will star in it. He’ll play a motorcycle stunt rider who learns that he has a son. He decides to try and be a father, in a beautiful yet very flawed way. It’s also kind of a crime story that takes place over a couple generations. It’s very much inspired by the works of Jack London. It deals with ancestry and Darwinism and survival of the fittest. It’ll shoot in upstate New York this summer.
It sounds great and with Gosling and Cooper headlining, this is definitely a film you’ll want to keep on your radar.
