Earlier this evening, 20th Century Fox staged a special event in New York City that brought forth new looks at Alien: Covenant and War of the Planet of the Apes and Logan. Of that trio, perhaps the one upcoming release that enjoyed the biggest splash was James Mangold’s R-rated actioner, one which signals Hugh Jackman’s swan song as Wolverine.
That’s because Fox treated those in attendance to the first 40 minutes of Wolverine’s final adventure, and the online reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with critics praising the gritty, Western tone and Dafne Keen’s performance as the young X-23/Laura. The latter is all but set to steal the show, it seems, but overall these knee-jerk impressions leave us feeling cautiously optimistic ahead of Logan‘s arrival in March.
Without further ado, here’s a quick sample of those reactions:
Just saw first act of #Logan. Wait til you guys meet Laura (X-23) — she steals every scene she is in.

X-23 absolutely steals the show. Best X-Men character since Deadpool. #Logan

First 40 minutes of #Logan better than all 2016 superhero movies.

#Fox screens first 40 minutes of #Logan. Fans are finally getting the bloody, primal Wolverine movie they always wanted.

Okay, saw 40 minutes. Will have an overall write up later, but this is a much more violent, cool version of Wolverine #Logan @joblocom

I think you guys are gonna really love X23. She is not to be fucked with #Logan @joblocom

In related news, it seems the second full trailer for Logan is right around the corner. It’s now been classified, according to the BBFC, indicating that Fox will choose to drop new footage over the coming weeks as the marketing machine begins to kick into gear.
Logan claws its way into theaters on March 3, 2017 when Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez will round out the starry ensemble.
