In totally not unnecessary remake news, a few script details on the RoboCop remake have begun floating about the Internet via Screen Rant and Drew McWeeny from Hit Fix. While it is far too early to make a pronouncement on this most essential of remakes (or is it a reboot now?) of the halfway schlocky 1987 film, the details are interesting, to say the least.
While I guide you to McWeeny’s Twitter feed to get the full breakdown, it appears that RoboCop will be going through a number of design modifications before he becomes the badass we all know and love. Addressing the somewhat old school look of the original character, there will be lots of redesigns to the armour, all of which will prepare our hero for a scene in which he carries out justice on an Al Qaeda training camp.
Wait a second, doesn’t that sound a great deal like a scene in a certain film involving a certain, shall we say, iron-like man?
Based on the McWeeny tweets, I’m with Kofi Outlaw from Screen Rant in saying that script-writers Joshua Zetumer and Nick Schenck appear to have borrowed heavily from Iron Man and Transformers without much modification of their own. Maybe they’d be better served to have actually borrowed from the original RoboCop?
Or perhaps we’re all being a wee bit unfair? After all, these are leaked script details, not a full-on script, and who knows what the final product will look like.
The cast is truly spectacular, with the likes of Gary Oldman, Hugh Laurie, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish and Jackie Earle Haley topping it out, and Joel Kinnaman of The Killing on board as Alex Murphy/RoboCop. Plus, Director Jose Padilha already has Elite Squad to his credit, so he can at least deliver in the action department.
RoboCop releases on August 9th, 2013 and we can only hope the outlook improves by then.
